Shillong in Meghalaya
Meghalaya has been one of the most memorable destinations that I have been. It was 15 years ago but I still remember the place so fondly. Shillong and Cherrapunji are great. It's a good place for photography and shopping trendy stuff. My friend went for a holiday last month, to Meghalaya and he was also all praises for the place. Pick up that bag and just go...Report Abuse
Meghalaya is one of the must see places in India. Gima has already told you about Shillong - I would also recommend it. You can hire a cab (Rs. 1200 for a day) to go to Cherrapunji - its a day trip and the drive is beautiful. But as you are looking for an offbeat experience, I would recommend visiting the living root bridges at village Laitkynsew (beyond Cherrapunji town). Its a 2-3 hr trek down a steep mountain but really worth it to see these bio-engineered structures. very few people actually make it down there and you cross quite a few native villages. There is also Bara Paani (Umiam Lake and Barrage) on the way back from Shillong to Guwahati) - an extremely beautiful lake. You can also trek or drive through the Jaintia hills - we didn't have time for this though. You are lucky to go to Meghalaya, a truly beautiful state.Report Abuse
Once in Meghalaya, it is difficult to miss Shillong - and indeed you should not. Though getting very touristy now, it is nevertheless charming. Extremely polite and helpful people, fiercely well dressed college students and off-beat food (rice cooked with pork blood). Anytime you have a doubt, just ask the locals and they will guide you to local sights. I was there in October last year and I didn't want to leave. That was the saddest I ever was at the end of the holiday - Meghalaya can have that effect on you. Report Abuse
Oh, Meghalaya itself is a dream destination. The whole year is good in Meghalaya, apart from the monsoons. Although there is nothing stopping you from going there during the rains, landslides and flooded roads might be a problem. Also, the difficulty of travelling in the interiors might offset the beauty of teh state (think big, big leaches). Report Abuse
