Darjeeling, compared to Shillong is much too crowded and in other terms also, Shillong scores much more than Darjeeling. You can rest assured that you'd love Shillong and the nearby places like Cherrapunjee, Mawlinnong, Mawsinram etc. You can also consider visiting Kohima and Aizawl.Tawang is also worth a visit and unlike somebody stated, it is not inaccessible during March and is a good time to visit.

I would recommend Sikkim, on the whole. But you need at least 8-10 days to tour all the major places, like Gangtok, Namchi, Pelling, Tsango, Yumthang, Rumtek. Best time to go to Sikkim is March - April. You could also visit the nearby places like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Mirik - these are just 4-5 hours away from Gangtok. It all depends on the number of days you're planning this trip.

Ziro is excellent. Don't know if it qualifies as a "hill-station" in the strict sense of the phrase and it isn't a big tourist destination either. But it is simply unmissable. Blue Pine hotel was a convenient proposition for food and lodging. Along and Daporijo are also quite close by.

DC has almost covered all the popular hill stations that you may think of going to in the Northeast...Here is one more, it is bit offbeat but a good place - Along in Arunachal Pradesh. Hanging Bridge on the Siang is one of the highlights in Along...Haflong in Assam (that DC has mentioned) is another place that I vote for...happy travel planning

Darjeeling, Gangtok, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Pelling are all pretty comfortable March onwards.. Shillong in Meghalaya even more so..March would be one of the few rain-free months for the North East i guess.. only certain spots like for example Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh remain inaccessible in March as the Sela pass enroute remains snowbound all through the arrival of summers.... rest of the North East is good to go in March....try Haflong in Assam..should be a new good place to explore in the north havent been there yet...would love to hear somebody review it....cheers :)
