Udaipur in Rajasthan
thank you for your advise mistral, i will go to the places you mention except for the rat temple, (not really into rats!).
and avoid the travel at night to abu road. maybe get there before 6pm and hang out nearby to catch our train after 11pm.
In Bikaner be sure to Visit the Camel Farm ( which is open to visitors only after 3 pm), The Karni Mata Temple (Rat Temple) 15 km from Bikaner at Deshnok, and, also the Jain Temple on your way to Nagaur. You may also vistit the Maharaja's museum . One and an half days is just what you need. In case you do not know what to do in the evening take a stroll at the central parK for a cool refreshing experience. Here you get an opportunity to mingle with the locals gentry too. You may view my Video Post and Images on Bikaner for a quick over view. Check out the Tags like sand sand dunes etc. A morning drive will treat you to excellent desert drive experience. Report Abuse
Pathfynder is absolurtely right. Though by and large most Rajasthan Roads are well maintained but they are single laned making night driving a bit more strainous. More over human habitation is very few along the highway and robbers are always on the lookout for an opportunity to loot travelers. Again because of better visibility during day time, its safer to drive on highways by day than at night. A family who had been playing cat and the dog race with us from Delhi to Bikaner via Jaipur, had plans to go to Udaipur, They had started at night and I was surprised to find them back next morning. Their Honda City had broken down after its bottom collided with some thing the driver did not notice lying on the road. Mechanics and spared had to be brought from Jaipur. They had cut short their trip and had to stay back in Bikaner for the whole day.Report Abuse
ANYBODY ELSE AGREE WITH -: "You must leave the for the destination by 6.30 AM to reach by afternoon. The road is not safe for night travels as the villagers still rob the taxi and pvt car"
(as i was planning to leave udaipur at 7pm to get to abu road train station for 11pm at night.)
Bikaner offers an old forts and a temple. The roads to Bikaner are very nice and deserted.
How about considering Jodhpur/Jaisalmer ? The route is also straight Udaipur-Abu-Jodhpur or other way around.
A word of caution DO NOT travel on Udaipur-Abu road at dark or late evenings. You must leave the for the destination by 6.30 AM to reach by afternoon. The road is not safe for night travels as the villagers still rob the taxi and pvt car.Report Abuse
Thank you for that, this has been very useful.
Would you know whether Bikaner is worthwhile visiting? I am only going for a full day & half and then head to udaipur in a car. But I am not sure whether the time would be better spent somewhere near Udaipur, saving the 10 hour car journey. J
..from Bikaner to Udaipur should take 10 hrs to drive...the distance being 550 kms via Nagaur, Ajmer, Chhittoragrh.. ..further on from Udaipur city to Abu road station is approx 150 km ..should take 2.5 hrs to cover the entire stretch which is on NH 14..this being an arterial route driving after sundown seems okay..
