Mukteshwar Quick Facts
  • Hill station, 350 km from Delhi
  • A 2-day holiday destination
  • Best to visit from March – June & Oct-Nov
  • Nearest City – Nainital, 51 km away

An ideal weekend destination, Mukteshwar is 350 km north of Delhi.  Located at an altitude of 2286 mts, Mukteshwar lies in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Popular for its spectacular views of the Himalayan range, Mukteshwar is the most sought after destination by discerning travellers in the Kumaon hills. But that is not the only highlight of this picturesque town surrounded by thick forests. There are easy walks and lovely places to see around.

Long before the present day traveller came to realize Mukteshwar as a destination to relax and recharge; British had already recognised the potential of Mukteshwar as a getaway to escape from the heat and dust of the plains. And perhaps that is why they established the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (founded in 1893) in Mukteshwar.

The picture postcard hill station is also associated with the legend of Shiva who it is said gifted immortality or Mukti to a demon that he slew. The Mukteshwar Temple dedicated to the Lord Shiva is the crowning glory of the town as is the mighty Himalayan range that forms a picture postcard backdrop and the various conifer and pine trees.

Neelkantha Peak

Mukteshwar is little different from run-of-the-mill hill stations as there is little that is called sightseeing. This has its advantages as this lets a traveller pause and take notice of the scenic beauty around. One can enjoy 180 degree uninterrupted views of the Himalayan snow peaks namely the Neelkantha, the three pronged peaks of the Trishul or the 'trident of the Shiva', Nandaghunti or the 'Veil of the Goddess', Nandadevi, the goddess of bliss & the second highest peak in India and the five-pronged Panchchuli on a clear sunny day.

Chauti Jaali

Those looking to explore Mukteshwar can visit the old Shiva Temple, popularly known as the Mukteshwar Temple located on top of a hill which comes alive during the annual Shivratri festival. Not too far from the Mukteshwar Temple is the Chauti Jaali – a rocky cliff jutting 500 ft out from the hill and offering splendid views of the mountains and of the town of Ramgarh as well. The cliff has a hole and it is said that if one manages to make a parikarma through it, allhis/her wishes will be fulfilled. However one needs to be very careful when doing parikarma.

Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) is a well-known landmark in Mukteshwar and a place worth visiting. It is a beautiful colonial style structure. The institute is one of the best veterinary hospitals in the area that takes care of the animals and birds of the area.

Places near Mukteshwar
