A small sea-side town located in the Devgad taluka of Sindhudurga district in Maharashtra, Kunkeshwar is known more for its scenic beauty than for its ancient Shiva Temple said to have been built by some unknown Arab sea-farer. A typical Konkani sea side village complete with swaying coconut, betel nut and palm trees Kunkeshwar is also highly acclaimed for orchards notably the Alphonso mangoes.

Kunkeshwar Shiva Temple

There is nothing much to do at Kunakeshwar except paying a visit to the beautiful Kunakeshwar Shiva Temple situated on top of a hill. The temple reminiscent of South Indian architecture was built as a mark of gratitude by an Arab sea-farer and the great Maratha warrior Shivaji has been said to have worshipped here. Within the temple complex are many small temples and a cave as well. Below the Kunakeshwar temple is the long and winding Kunakeshwar Beach with its vast stretch of white sand and crystal clear emerald waters which will tempt you for a swim.

Devgad Mangoes

Devgad, 20 km from Kunkeshwar is famous for its mango orchards. Devgad also has a fort which amazingly has withstood the ravages of time. Most of the walls and structures of the fort are still intact and in good condition. The Lighthouse in the fort is remarkable for its excellent craftsmanship. The rock carved Gajbadevi and the Vimaleswar Siva Temple are the two noteworthy temples of Devgad. The Vimaleswar Siva Temple well known for its peculiar shape which looks as leaning towards one side like the leaning tower of Pisa. The Devgad Beach is yet another place where one can spent some quality time in solitary confinement. What makes this scenic beach even more noteworthy is the presence of windmills nearby.

If you are looking for something more interesting then drive southwards from Devgad or back track to Kunakeshwar for the Tara Mumbri Beach. While its  crystal clear water are as inviting as those of Kunakeshwar and Devgad beaches, its beauty is more enhanced during the night when the phosphorescence phenomena takes place. i.e., the waves appear to be on fire. When at Tara Mumbri beach also look out for the presence of porpoises.

VijayDurga fort

Vijaydurga at 37 km from Kunkeshwar is another place where you can head to. The place is noteworthy for its fort, beach and the Rameshwar Temple. Vijaydurga also has special place in the realms of science. It is the place where the scientist Locier discovered the presence of helium on the surface of the sun from the cement platforms which he had built to study the effects of the solar eclipse in 1898.

How to reach Kunkeshwar

By Air: The nearest airport is Dabolim in Goa, 70 km away. International Airport at Mumbai is 510 km away.

By Train: Nearest railheads are at Nandgaon (36 km) and Kankavli (47 km).

By Bus: Maharashtra State Public Transport buses connect Kunkeshwar to nearby cities like Belgaon, Panaji, Pune and Mumbai. Luxury buses are also available from Mumbai to Kunkeshwar.

During Mahashivaratri Festival 'Yatra Special' buses are arranged by the state transport authorities from various places like Kankawali, Kudal and Sawantwadi to Kunkeshwar.

Best Time to Go: November– February and June- August. Go in April for enjoy Alphonso mangoes, the region's specialty
