Igatpuri Quick Facts
  • Igatpuri is 140 km from Mumbai
  • Good for a family holiday

A small non-descript town known more as a railway junction than a weekend gateway, Igatpuri really cracks a punch. Located 2000 ft above sea level, on the Mumbai - Nashik route, Igatpuri surrounded by the highest peaks of the Sahyadri ranges is a heaven for adventure lovers as well as for those looking to rejuvenate and recharge their batteries. What make this place even more special is that Igatpuri is far cooler than the famous Lonavala–Khandala - all the more reason to head towards it for a weekend escape.

Places to See
Camel valley Igatpuri

Igatpuri has got some of the most stunning valleys and waterfalls. The Bhatsa River Valley located at the end of Thal Ghat is famous for its lush green cover as much as for its river that cuts through it. However, it is the Camel valley that occupies the pride of the place. The valley located to the right of the highway is a huge favorite among the trekkers and the hikers who go about a discovery spree to discover its many waterfalls and creeks which by the way looks amazing during the monsoons as they fall from a height of 1000 ft onto the base of the valley. Do keep your eyes open to locate this marvelous piece of Mother Nature as there are instances of people missing it on their way. To reach the valley you will need to walk over and look down to find a slope that falls over 1000 ft. Once you have discovered the myriad waterfalls, pay your respects or thanks to the Goddess of Ghats at the Ghantadevi Mandir located a few kilometers from the Camel valley.

Tringalwadi Lake

Tringalwadi Fort located not too far away from the Mahindra & Mahindra plant is a trekker’s delight. A small path on the edge of the mountain adjoining Igatpuri leads to the fort from where one can get a spectacular view of the mountains around. Trek a bit further from the fort and you will come across the Tringalwadi Lake and the Talegaon Lake and Dam.

For those seeking nirvana, there is Dhammagiri with its Vipassana Research Institute located on the outskirts of Igatpuri. Vipassana is a Buddhist style of meditation and the institute conducts various short term and long term residential course. To know more, visit http://www.vri.dhamma.org/
