Not too far from the hustle and bustle of Ooty or Udhagamandalam, Coonoor is a lovely weekend getaway that promises a wonderful holiday experience.  Blessed with a milder climate than Ooty, Coonoor is located on a lower ridge of the main plateau at an altitude of 1839 meters. A popular hill getaway in Tamil Nadu, Coonoor is known for its exceptional tea as the climate here is very conducive for cultivating tea. In fact, a stroll down the tea gardens is one of the highlights of a tour to Coonoor.

Besides being a scenic delight, Coonoor has a few magnificent buildings and cottages sprinkled around. Like most hill stations in India, Coonoor has traces of the Raj era, which can be found in many of its honeysuckle-fronted cottages like ‘The Gables’ and ‘Gorse View’.  There are other imprints of the British Raj as well and one being the headstones of the graveyards where many a Colonel Hughes and Miss Jones rest in peace.

There are many picnic spots in Coonoor, which make it a complete family getaway. In fact such is the beauty of Coonoor that it has been used as the backdrop for several movies made by Indian and foreign filmmakers. An American film A Passage to India by David Lean was shot here. The movie was based on a novel by E. M. Foster.

There are a number of places to see in Coonoor. Catherine Falls, also known as St. Catherine's Falls is a popular attraction in Coonoor. This cascading beauty falls from an impressive height of 250 feet and can be clearly seen from the top of Dolphin's Nose. One can also take a road to the top of the falls. This vantage point offers lovely views. Dolphin's Nose, an enormous rock formation looks exactly like what it is named after, a dolphin's nose. The climb up the rock is worth it, as the views are absolutely spectacular. There are gigantic ravines both to the left and right of Dolphin's Nose. In one, you can clearly see the awe inspiring Catherine Falls with its continuing stream several thousand meters below; in the other, you can spot where the Coonoor stream meets the Kotagiri stream.

A trek up to the Droog Fort (once a military outpost) is another exciting thing that you can do in Coonoor. This old and worn out fort offers panoramic views. Today, only a wall remains of this military outpost. The fort was used by Tipu Sultan as a military outpost. St. George's Church is an excellent example of a typical Cantonment Church. It was built in 1826 and was designed by Colonel J.T.Boileau. It is made of yellow ochre stucco with white dressings.
