Such was the charm and appeal of Digha that it found mention in one of Warren Hastings’ (First Governor General of India - 1773 to 1785) letters to his wife where he called Digha as ‘Brighton of the East’. That was in 1780. Later in 1923, an English tourist John Frank Smith after being bowled over by the beauty of Digha made Digha his home. In fact, it is said that he convinced Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948-1962) to develop Digha as a beach resort.
Today, Digha has been discovered by the Indian traveller, more so by the people of Kolkata who frequent Digha on weekends. It is hardly 4-5 hrs drive from Kolkata and reaching here is very easy and convenient. Digha is located 187 km south-west of Kolkata.
