If you are looking for quick and comfortable getaway from Hyderabad, Nagarjuna Sagar is a lovely place to hit the road. Nagarjuna Sagar is just 150 km from Hyderabad. The major attraction here is the famous Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, which is among the largest dams built in the country. The dam is built on the Krishna River and is located between Guntur and Nalagonda districts of Andhra Pradesh. The dam was built in 1969, 14 years after its foundation stone was laid down by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1955. The dam serves the irrigation needs of the region and is also a source of hydro-electricity. The lake that got created after the dam was built is the third largest man-made lake in the world. And the sheer size of the lake is huge.

Besides the dam, Nagarjuna Sagar is also one of the prominent Buddhist centers in Andhra Pradesh. In fact, the place takes its present name from Nagarjuna, one of the most revered Buddhist saints, who governed the sangha for nearly 60 years around the turn of the 2nd century AD. The Nagarjunakonda Museum located on the Nagarjunakonda Island is another attraction that one can visit in Nagarjuna Sagar. The museum can be reached by taking a launch ride that starts at 9:30 am, 11:30 am and the last at 1:30 pm. The tourists to museum generally get one hour’s time to visit the museum.
