Joshimath is located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. It is a quaint little town nestled amidst the mighty Himalayas en route to Badrinath, one of the Chardhams of Uttarakhand. Joshimath is also the junction point for people visiting Auli, one of the best skiing spots in India.

Although identified more as a stopover destination to Badrinath, Vishnu Prayag, Hemkund Saheb, Valley of Flowers and Auli, yet Joshimath has its own merit. Joshimath has got its own share of religious importance. It is one of the seats of one of the four Mathas (or Monasteries). In fact this is the only matha in northern region. This is probably the reason why Joshimath was known as Jyotirmath-the temple of light/wisdom.

Joshimath is also the abode of Shri Badrinath during winters when the roads to Badrinath Dham are closed. Also it is gateway to Auli which is considered as one of the finest skiing spots in India as well as home to highest and longest cable car in Asia.

You may appreciate the raw beauty of nature that lies scattered everywhere. The scenery of the mountains slopes and the Rivers Alaknanda, Dhauliganga and the other tributaries of The Ganges flowing along the narrow mountain roads is bound to keep you spell bound .

There are multiple options to stay in Joshimat. GMVNL Tourist Bungalow, which is situated near bus stand in Joshimath, is a good value for money and offers satisfactory services. One thing to make a note is that beside this one there is another GMVNL property in Joshimath. However the aforementioned is a new building. So before booking one must confirm which property he or she is booking. Average room rent would be around 600-800 Rs. for a double bed room. Besides you have other hotels like Hotel Dronagiri where in a night might cost you anywhere around Rs. 800 – Rs. 4000 depending upon the class of room you choose or Hotel Mount View.
