Panchgani was discovered during the British Raj as a summer resort and now is one of the popular locations for Bollywood’s song and dance sequences.  Recall the recently acclaimed movie Taare Zameen Par; the songs were shot on this beautiful destination which is nestled amidst five hills in the Sahyadri mountain ranges, and the Krishna River flows nearby. Panchgani is often referred to as the ‘Mecca of Maharashtra’, which speaks volumes about its alluring appeal and captivating beauty.

Panchgani is made out of two terms 'Panch' and 'Gani', which stand for 'five' and 'hills'. The five hills surrounding Panchgani are topped by a volcanic plateau, which is the second highest in Asia after the Tibetan plateau. These plateaus, alternatively known as table land, are a part of the Deccan Plateau.

At an altitude of 1334m and 20kms from Mahabaleshwar, the drive to Panchgani offers picturesque views of the river Krishna on one side & the coastal plains on the other. Situated in the Western Ghats Panchgani is also close to important cities like Mumbai and Pune; 285kms and 100kms respectively.

Panchgani is the quintessential hill station with its old architecture of the old British buildings, the Parsi houses, the boarding schools, which have been there for a century or more. The Pinewood Academy, Billimoria, Hill Range, Oaks, St. Joseph's and St. Peter's are some elite boarding schools in Panchgani, that are counted among the best in the country.

The laid back and relaxed hill station is ideal to unwind as it is not like the usually over-crowded hill-stations. The crisp and clean air of this destination will leave you rejuvenated and addicted to this place. Adding to the natural scenic beauty are the silver oaks and poinsettia trees that have flourished since the British Raj in Panchgani. The temperature in Panchgani is around 16C during the winter, and reaches 30C during the summer; the humidity level is very low here. September to May is the best time to visit Panchgani.

Tourists visit the charming hill station throughout the year; and there are many places to stay in Panchgani varying from deluxe hotels, luxury hotels, and budget hotels to guest houses, you can find every possible accommodation as per your requirement and budget. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation runs its own hotel, which is a good place to put up at during a trip to Panchgani. Some other good places to stay are: For a luxurious stay choose Comfort Inn Dhanhills/  IL Palazzo Hotel; for a budget stay choose Cliff Inn Resort/ Rahil Plaza Hotel. And for a deluxe stay choose The Ravine Hotel/ Hotel Millennium Park.
