Mangalore has the laid back attitude of Goa but with more space and modernity. In and around Mangalore there are places of religious and historical importance to see, however it does lack the popular tourist appeal that many other coastal cities have. Though it has ports of importance and a shipping dock, its historical importance as a strategic port has quite often been overlooked.
Socially Mangalore is along the lines of Goa. One finds Konkanis, Catholics and Hindu communities. However, the most distinct feature of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi is that most people here speak Tullu. In fact the region is actually called Tullunad. Now Tullu is only a spoken language and is actually written in Kannada. The Shettys are the predominant and affluent community in Mangalore.
