Udupi's is one of the important Vaishnavite destination, with its famous Krishna temple and eight mutts associated with it. The temple is known for the legend of Kanakadasa, a devotee of Krishna who is known to have made the idol turn. When Kanakadasa was refused entry into the temple owing to his origins, he went to the back of the temple and prayed to Krishna. It is said that the rear wall of the temple then gave way, and the idol of Krishna turned around for Kanakadasa to see. The wall was eventually built into a window, and was called 'Kanakana Kindi' – Kanaka's hole. People still see the idol of Krishna from this window.
