Guwahati is a city of prime importance in Assam. Guwahati today is popularly known as the gateway to the north-east of India. It is in fact the largest industrial and commercial city of Assam. Guwahati was earlier called Pragiyotishpur, the city of Eastern Light. Historical records trace the origin of the city to the 6th century when it was called Pragjyotishpura. It later came to be known as Durjoya during the reign of Varman and Pala when the region was called Kamarupa.
With every new dynasty the city name was changed but its status as a capital remained same. It is also said that it was the naval base for the Varman rulers in the 7th century. It is not clear when the city name was changed to Guwahati. The name however is derived from two Assamese words ‘guwa’ mea + more about Guwahati
